In the last week of the Summer term, Barr Beacon School hosted 28 Chinese students and 2 staff members who fully immersed themselves into the English education system. The Immersion Project, which was supported by HSI (High Schools International) gives international students an opportunity to develop their English speaking skills by following a classroom timetable, coupled with a host of traditional English games and experiences.
During the week, the international students were buddied up with a Barr Beacon pupil to help fine tune their English speaking skills. The buddyies took part in the activities with the Chinese students and gave them a sample of a day at Beacon by taking them along to their lessons.
With all the time spent together, the Chinese students and Beacon pupils soon became friends with the Beacon pupils demonstrating resilience, developing communication skills and showing true leadership skills throughout the week.
Some pupils – both Chinese and English – had a hard time saying goodbye, having formed strong friendships even though it was only a relatively short time.
Well done to all those involved.
