On the 23rd April, 3 of our golfers took on the challenge of trying to compete for Staffordshire in the schools’ championship.
The competition is held yearly and is open to any school-aged golfer with a handicap of under 12. The top 5 represent Staffordshire in the regional final at Notts Golf Course on the 31st May in a 36 hole competition. This is a low handicap event and therefore only open to the elite golfers in the region. Barr Beacon has 3 golfers who were eligible to enter: A. Donoghue (Year 13), A. Matharu (Year 10) and J. Donoghue (Year 8). All play their golf at Walsall Golf Club. We were the school with the most players in the 26 player field.
Brocton Hall is a challenging course, situated on the edge of Cannock Chase. It was very windy and the greens had been set out with difficult pin positions. All 3 players came in with respectable scores. All of our golfers finished in the top 10 with very respectable scores. This was a gross competition however, and therefore benefited the low handicap players. A. Donoghue came in with a highly respectable 78 gross, which meant that he tied 4th position on the day and qualified for final in May.
Well done to all who entered.
