During the Summer term, the English department worked alongside the Young Writers Association (YWA) to help pupils in current Years 8-10 showcase their creative writing flair. For this competition, pupils were asked to create a 100 word mini-saga which fit under the genre of ‘speculative fiction’. The characters they included, the settings where their stories were based, and even their titles were decided without any support by staff. With a three week completion deadline and the competition coming to a close, 116 pupils entered the competition and sent their stories off to the YWA. With 18,000 entries across the country, the competition this year was very strong but we are delighted to announce that a whopping 63 of our pupils have had their work selected for publication. On behalf of all of the English Department and staff at Barr Beacon, we want to congratulate all pupils for this fantastic achievement. We are only hoping to double, even triple, the amount of published writers this autumn as pupils enter a poetry competition ran by YWA too.
